Birding at Mabuda

At Mabuda, we are conscious of our responsibility to steward the land. We invest heavily in conservation, and in return, we’re blessed with incredible biodiversity all around us. If you’re a birder, then a trip to Mabuda is an extra special treat. Mabuda is a favourite destination for local enthusiasts and tourists alike with over 230 observed species.

Please note: we strongly advise that all guests wear insect repellent, closed shoes, and long pants.

Information for Day Visitors

  • Day Visitors are welcome at Mabuda 8am and 4pm.
  • Please purchase a walking pass for E60.
  • Day Visitors must park and register at The Green Shed. 
  • Please respect our working farm — there is strictly no driving on the farm and no feeding the animals.

Popular Nature Trails

BIRDING at Grandpa’s Secret Garden (+-2kms)

  • Self-guided trails (no charge for overnight guests). 
  • Spend some time in our Bird Hide.
  • Best time: 7am
  • Commonly seen: Twinspot, Gorgeous Bush-Shrike, Yellow-Rumped Tinkerbird, Chinspot Batis, Black Sparrowhawk, Gymnogene, Grey Sunbird.
  • Rare but seen: Lizard Buzzard, Green-backed Twinspot, Narina Trogon, African Emerald Cuckoo, African Broadbill.

BIRDING at the Lily Pond (+-3kms)

  • Self-guided trails (no charge for overnight guests).
  • Best Time: 7am
  • Spend some time around our wetland and ponds, where you can expect to see more water birds! Feel free to bring along refreshments to enjoy in the tranquil surroundings as you lookout for birds.

Sunset stroll to The Rocks (+-3kms)

  • Self-Guided, only available to overnight guests.
  • Leave @ 4:30pm
  • Take a gentle stroll to our favourite sunset spot at ‘The Rocks’. Enjoy a drink with friends as the light fades over the lowveld below. If you’re feeling energetic, stroll along a nearby forested trail.
